The D7/D8 visa is the first step to establish legal residence in Portugal. It will be valid for four months, grant you two entries in the country, and provide you an appointment to apply for a residence permit that will be valid for two years.

    VISA D7 – RETIREMENT OR PASSIVE INCOME

    Financial Requirements:

    The main applicant must demonstrate a passive income of at least €820 per month. Additionally, a Portuguese bank account with a minimum balance of €9,840 (equivalent to 12 months of €820) is required.

    Including Family Members:

    When including family members in the application, the income and deposit requirements increase by 50% per adult and 30% per child.

    Processing Time:

    The process can take between 3 to 6 months, depending on the Embassy/VFS Global’s schedule. Once approved, you will have 120 days to arrive in Portugal.

    VISA D8 – REMOTE WORK AND DIGITAL NOMADISM

    If you dream of living in Portugal and working remotely for a company located outside Portuguese territory, the D8 Visa for remote workers could be the solution!

    Financial Requirements:

    The Digital Nomad Visa is designed for remote workers who earn at least 4 * €820 (totaling €3,280) per month. The government will verify the funds based on documentation proving services provided to one or more entities.

    Including Family Members:

    When including family members in the application, you must prove that your monthly income is at least (4 * €820) plus 50% per adult or 30% per child.

    Processing Time:

    The process can take between 3 to 6 months, depending on the Embassy/VFS Global’s schedule. Once approved, you will have 120 days to arrive in Portugal.

    What are the requirements for international health insurance?
    For temporary stay visas, the insurance must be valid for the duration of your stay in Portugal. For residence visas, the insurance must be valid for at least one year. In both cases, the insurance must cover €30,000 for medical and hospital expenses, repatriation, and accidental death.
    Can another person apply for my visa on my behalf with power of attorney?
    No. The visa process must be initiated by the applicant personally. Even with power of attorney, third parties are not permitted to apply for the visa. For minors, appointments must be scheduled with a guardian present.
    I live abroad with a residence permit. Do I need to present this document to apply for a visa to Portugal?
    Yes, you need to present this document, and it must be valid.
    Is there an expedited processing fee that can be paid to the Embassy/VFS?
    No. It is not possible to request expedited processing or pay an additional fee for faster visa processing for Portugal.
    If my visa is denied, can I appeal?

    Yes, you can appeal within the legal deadline and using the appropriate form. The appeal must be submitted to the VFS/Embassy that received your application.

    Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
    Can I submit my Visa application at any VFS/Embassy?
    No. You must apply at the authority that has territorial jurisdiction over the location of your current residence.
    Does the visa application form need to be filled out online?
    The form can be completed online or by hand using a black pen.
    Is it always necessary to open a bank account in Portugal to apply for a visa?
    For the D7 visa, it is mandatory. For others, it is recommended. Moreover, having a bank account in Portugal will streamline activities such as paying rent, purchasing a house, and covering expenses.
    Will my passport be retained during the Embassy/VFS’s visa application review?
    As a general rule, yes. Your passport will be retained for the entire review period and cannot be returned for travel to Portugal. If you need your passport to travel to other countries, you must write a letter requesting a temporary loan and submit it to the VFS/Embassy.
    When and where is it possible to apply for the visa?
    You can apply for the visa at the respective competent VFS/Embassy, always before entering Portugal (as visas are always required outside Portugal).
